A Legacy of Vision: The History of IISc
1890s: The Genesis of an Idea
The vision for a world-class university in India was born in the mind of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, a pioneering industrialist and philanthropist. He believed fervently in the power of scientific research and higher education to transform India’s social and economic landscape.
1898: The Proposal
A provisional committee, led by educationist Burjorji Padshah, was established by Tata to create a blueprint for the university. On December 31, 1898, a draft proposal was presented to the then Viceroy, Lord Curzon.

After years of planning and overcoming hurdles, including Tata’s death in 1904, the Indian Institute of Science was officially established on May 27, 1909.
